Ghana’s public sphere has witnessed a growing media presence which has enhanced the relay of information to the citizenry on different contents and audience over the last decade but one area that has not enjoyed the growing media plurality and presence is the library.
The potential contribution of information to economic and socio cultural development has never been seriously appreciated, this has contributed to the worsening conditions of libraries, museums, archives and other related memory institutions.
Little attention and support is given to these information centers and as a result, are unable to effectively perform their roles in national development. Information in this modern times is considered as the first factor of production. It is therefore imperative to discuss relevant issues that will seek to promote the activities of these important institutions to achieve their full benefits.
There are very few media platforms and instances where the subject of libraries are discussed.
As part of efforts to promote libraries and other information centers and also to encourage students and the Public to patronize the library radio univers in collaboration with six library staff of the university of Ghana library system (UGLS) came up with a beautiful library program concept which brings professionals from different backgrounds within the information science domain to talk about pertinent issues regarding that space.
The program is dubbed let’s go to the library.
Very competent resource persons are carefully selected and invited to speak on innovations and various issues affecting libraries and other information centres in the university and the country at large.
Some of the personalities who have featured on the program include the past Ag University librarian Prof P, Dadzie, Dr Wale Okediran (Secretary General of Pan African Writers Association) Mr Simon Teye (Director George Padmore library for African Affairs Ghana library Authority) Mr Joe Antah esq. University of Ghana law school librarian to name but a few.
